December Drinking Dates Up

Well everyone, we always know that this is the busiest time of the year for everyone but there should be time made for friends and drinks, so why not Wednesday nights?  As mentioned before, since the weather is completely unpredictable this time of year and the new years' resolutions have not started, we are now meeting 9PM directly at the bars, rather than running anywhere.

We will start off this phase of the beer runners on a slightly different twist; by hitting a scotch bar.  L'ile Noire is a fantastic spot not as well known off St. Denis that does offer beer as well, but for those that are curious, they boast one of the best scotch selections in the city.

Come check it out, and now that there's no running required, there are significantly less excuses as well.

Last Run of the Season- Special Announcement

Hello Everyone,

I'd like to start by thanking all the great people that have joined us for our first full year of runs and especially those who have made us a part of each and every Wednesday night.  It's a great group, and we're not going to let it end just yet.  Though the weather is getting more and more cumbersome for running, we're gonna keep the party going, even after this last run to 3 Brasseurs.

Which leads to the special announcement of the week.  While this will be the last official Beer Run of the 2012 season, we will be bypassing the run portion and simply become the Montreal Beer (Drinkers, Drinking Society, something like that).  We will keep Wednesday night alive, but now we will start at 9 by meeting directly at our destination.  Keep an eye on the website and facebook group for the locations every week, and feel free to come at any time.  We'll aim to put our running shoes back on in March or April, once there's no more ice.

Pizza and Beer- Cheap Too!

So since the bar is my place this week the system will be a bit different than usual.  Beer will only cost everyone a fraction of the bar price, but I am cash only (I suppose I can take personal cheque as well with 2 forms of ID).  In addition, we will get some yummy yummy pizza delivered in so make sure you know what you want on yours before getting on the run.

We've got November Runs! Don't Stop Running!!

Yes people, we're still going strong.  A few more (optional) layers of clothes can't keep us from our weekly meetings and libations.  However, given the time of year, we are looking to be more transit friendly for the trips home, and have a few great destinations lined up, including a few old favorites.  Sorry for the late notice, but it promises to be the fun that never ends.

Halloween Update- Brasserie Cherrier

Ok everyone, here's the wednesday plan:

We will meet up at 1400 Ave des pins west, Apt 701 (that's Lauren and my place), 6PM. We have zombie make-up artists waiting on hand to help those of us that are challenged in that area.

Once prepped, we'll get out to the mountain and create general mayhem. We plan to have one, perhaps two videographers to record the experience. Once we're done, we'll head off to probably one of the favorite Beer Runners Destinations, Brasserie Cherrier on St. Denis (
3638 Rue Saint Denis).  Remember...THE BAR IS CASH ONLY.

If you plan on having friends join or meet us after, they are welcome for any of it. I would assume we hit the bars around 7:45-8PM

More Great Weather- Halloween Destination Needed

This really has been a fantastic year for us runners, lots of good weather (especially on Wednesdays) to really make beer running the place to be.  Looking at this week it's gonna be around 10 degrees again for the run, and the destination is one of the top beer bars in the city; easily the best located too!  The Saint Bock has almost 30 craft brews from all over the province including some award winners that they make on their own.

Also, more details regarding the mystery Halloween run are coming.  So far we know that it will begin around 6PM rather than 7, and start with meeting together so that everyone gets all zombie-fied together as we prepare to give some other runners a delightful scare.  Keep your eyes posted here and on facebook  for more details as they come.

Good Weather, Good Running

Though it may be a few degrees cooler than everyone would like, it's still a few degrees better than what it could be around here.  In fact, for running, it might be the best weather we have had all year.  The crisp evening air invigorates us all very well, and may keep some of us (mainly yours truly) from being a disgusting sweat waterfall by the time we make it to the bar.  If you haven't joined us yet, don't worry, there's still plenty of time and plenty of fun to be had before we even think about hanging up our running shoes.

October 1, 2012

It's October, and we're still crazy enough to be running!

Fear not everyone, the beer runners are still going, in fact we're just getting started for the fun season.  October promises to be a great month, 5 Wednesdays, 5 different great bars and a Halloween run that promises to make it a holiday to remember.  Check out the courses, get your warmer running gear out, and most importantly, bring your friends along.

Don't Be Afraid of A Little Rain

It's alright, in fact it's the best weather to run in, though at this point the forecasts seem to think that if the rain comes it will be clearing out by 7 anyways.  So if you're done with dragon boats or your marathon (congrats to all that finished this past weekend), now's a great time to enjoy the lighter side with a beer run.

If for some reason the weather does not cooperate, we can easily change the destination bar to something closer and more manageable, but what would be the fun in that?

Changes Are Happening- Pay Attention!

Ok people, listen up, we've got a lot going on, and with big natural changes we've got to keep up.  Since it's getting dark much earlier now, on top of moving the runs up to 7PM we have to change the meeting spot to somewhere with light.  Luckily, the Tam Tams statue has lights and is close to the gazebo, so that is an easy one.

Secondly, due to some members having an event tomorrow evening, we swapped the destination of the run to Brasserie Cherrier from Typhoon to keep everyone closer to downtown.  We will still get to Typhoon the week after before the weather starts to really get the best of us.

So, to recap:
1. Meeting time is now 7PM at Tam Tams Statue
2. This week is Brasserie Cherrier, map is on the right hand side.

Rain or shine, we'll still be going!

Beer Running- The Scientific Side

So as word of the running club has been infiltrating conversation around Montreal, many people have speculated and questioned the validity of drinking beer after a run.  Some turn up their nose at the idea of being at a bar post-exercise and sweaty, some think that you are doing more harm than good for yourself.

Well, since there is no run update to give this week I instead offer a science update.  Below are two articles pertaining to the science of beer running, the first being an example directly from Dr. Manuel J Castillo-Garzon, MD, whose research inspired the original Fishtown Beer Runners club in Philadelphia.  The second is another research study summary written about from the New York Times Health & Science section.  While its science appears solid, I cannot help but question the amount of fun non-alcoholic beer offers compared to the real thing.

September Runs Are Up- Other Announcements

Hello Fellow Runners:

We have some big changes going on with the club, and I'm not just talking about the weather outside.

1. Following the Lance Armstrong run where there was definitely some new interest among those who did not know us before, we decided there's no better time for a run to Benelux in a "Choose Your Own Adventure" run, where everyone can choose their own distance to go, seeing as the destination is so close.

2. September 12- There is a significant event that many of the club will attend that is in no way related to Beer Running sadly, so I have not chosen a location, though anyone who still wants to take up the standard and find something is more than welcome.

3. Runs are now officially moved up to 7PM starting this month as the sunlight is fading away quickly on us.  This is however in now way a sign that the club will be closing shop any time soon, we aim to run until the threat of our beer being frozen waiting for us as the bar is a distinct possibility.

4.  If you haven't yet, make sure to join the facebook page for more info, announcements, and silliness related to beer and running.

RUNNING WITH LANCE ARMSTRONG TONIGHT!!! MOVED UP TO 6PM

Wow, so the local twitterverse here in Montreal has exploded because the amazing (regardless of his recent headlines) Lance Armstrong will be hosting a special run tonight starting at 6PM at the Tam Tams statue for a 7.5km run through the park.

We will do as much as we each can do individually, then regroup at the finish and walk over to St. Sulpice after for celebratory drinks. If we can convince Lance to join us, that'll be icing on the cake.

We're Moving The Starting Point!!!! IMPORTANT NOTICE

Ok, so since we've been having some trouble with people locating the club, using the McGill gym as a reference point has to go.  So, we've moved up the street just a bit, but it'll be a new point that sticks out much more and will not be crowded or confusing.

From now on, runs will start at the Gazebo on Parc Jeanne-Mance, just down the hill (south) of the Tam Tams monument outside the entrance to the mountain from Avenue Parc.  Runs will still start at 7:30 for now, but may switch to 7 soon to take more advantage of the dwindling daylight.

Hope this is easier for everyone and we're still proud to say that we keep growing every week and will not stop until everyone knows who we are!

Last weeks of summer, make it count!

The summer days seem to quickly be fading on us here, but we intend to make the most of it.  Tonight's run is to a great location more off the beaten path than a lot of the bars so far, but definitely a great one to check out.  The beer list tonight is 33 beers long, the terrace is still open, and there's no better place to be.  http://www.vicesetversa.com/.

Side note: We are considering changing the starting location.  If anyone has had trouble locating us please don't be shy and we can explore other start points.

Rain or Shine, We Run!

Hello Everyone,

Don't let the weather outside get you down or make you worry, we still run, even if the rain will try to melt us or even worse dilute our beers.  Luckily, Brutopia has plenty of room inside and out, so all you really need to worry about is getting to the bar.

See everyone near the corner of Parc and Des Pins, don't look for us at the entrance of the gym, we meet more down by the windows of the weight room (for those of you that know what the McGill gym's interior is like)

We're now on facebook.......fancy!!!

Well the group just keeps on growing, but the word still needs to get out there.  So, the official Montreal Beer Runners facebook group has been made, and it's the place to go to get to know your fellow runners, upload pics and videos, and start random discussions on whatever truly suits your fancy.

You can find it by looking up Montreal Beer Runners or clicking the link http://www.facebook.com/groups/392120524189223/.

Have fun and looking forward to seeing everyone tonight.

August Runs are Up!

The final month of summer is closing in upon us, time to make the most of the incredible weather we've had these past few months.  The destinations this week are taking us all over the city; from the busy nightlife of Crescent all the way up to the Jean Talon Market and beyond.  Check out the links on the right for the locations and the routes.

July 25, 2012

Beneluxxxxxxx!!!

Well once again the Bacchus must be shining his light on Montreal as it'll be another perfect evening for a Beer Run.  To make it even better, it's a Choose Your Own Adventure run, as Benelux is one of the easiest destinations for a beer run we've chosen yet.  While it's a recommended 5k (just click the link on the right), you can go anywhere from 1-15k if you like, it's just that easy!  Top it off with some of the best beers in the city and a monstrous terrace; there's no better way to enjoy a night like this in Montreal!

July 16, 2012

2 New Runs, Closing out July

So we've had great fortune this summer since switching to Wednesday nights, and it looks like it's going to continue.  If all goes well, this week's forecast is for 24 and partially cloudy for Wednesday evening, so it's time to get a bit of a longer run in to a great destination.  Brasseur de Montreal not only has great beer, but a kick-ass terrace out back in a great part of town, so check out the route on the right and meet us on the corner of Parc and Pins @ 7:30.

July 11, 2012

Great Weather, Back to Wednesday's

So after so many failures to launch last year this year the weather has been perfectly ideal for beer runs, and tonight is no exception.  It's an easy run tonight too, heading over to Grumpy's on Bishop for some good beer, patio, and great music on a evening that can't be spent doing anything else.  Get your shoes on, and we'll see you on the corner of Parc @ 7:30.

July 3, 2012

Special Tuesday Edition of MBR- Montreal Jazz Fest!

Due to glorious run conditions and a once in a year opportunity, the Montreal Beer Runners are making a special Tuesday run this week down to Place Des Arts to soak in some beautiful evening weather and fantastic jazz at the Jazz Festival rather than a bar destination.  Not to worry, still plenty of beer to be drank and an even better outdoor setting for the night, so come on down and join us!

Time has also been changed to 7PM so that we get there for lots of good music.

June 27, 2012

Rain will be over, excellent night to run

Don't let these little raindrops fool you, it's gonna be a perfect night for a run, so you better get your shoes on and join us up to Dieu Du Ciel!, one of the top brewpubs in the city for their top-notch beers and great finger food to appease the best of beer runner appetites.

June 19, 2012

Get Your Drinking Face On!

We are definitely on for tomorrow, all that heat is gonna do is make you want the cold beer at the end even more!

June 11, 2012

First Run June 20th, Spread the Word

In case it wasn't clear from the last post, the first run will be June 20's to Else's on Roy, click this link to see the route (6km).

MBR Returns for 2012 Summer!

So after a horribly failed experiment last summer, Montreal Beer Runners is starting anew, bringing the same old fun but in a more regular manner!  We want to kick off this year right, so the three opening bars will send the runners all over the city to great destinations with even better post-run beers.  We look forward to seeing everyone at the new 7:30 start time outside the McGill gym.

Cheers, and to the professor!
