Welcome Back to Running for 2016!

Hello to all Beer Runners and Future Beer Runners,

Welcome back for 2016!  We have finished our winter of drinking practice and are ready to begin running again! It is time to work off those extra beers from the winter season and enjoy the beautiful Montreal weather while it lasts. So, without further ado, we are back to 7PM and we are back to running!

I do hope to encourage more new runners to join us this year, we have a fantastic core of anywhere from 12-25 every week, and love getting to see new faces.  So please, head to Tam Tams on Wednesdays, find the group full of Red & Gold Beer Runner T-Shirts ($20, limited stock still available), and come see why we keep doing this crazy thing and love it after many, many years.

Cheers!

Brad

Photo Op Tonight for MTL Blog

Hey Everyone,

Sorry not to be so active here, we do much more on Meetup.com and facebook nowadays, but for those of you that still follow us here, we have a lot going on now.  Mostly, the shirts are doing their job and gathering attention for us.  So much so that now MTL Blog wants to do a little piece on us.  As a result, I quickly realized that we are significantly lacking in group and action shots of us.  So, let's fix that tonight.

I will bring a fair amount of shirts to Tam Tams with me.  Some of you I still owe a shirt to, some may want them for the photos.  Either way, we'll try to get some shots of us at the beginning, maybe some action shots, and of course the end at St. Amboise.  So bring your smiles, drink your beer, and come have some fun tonight.

Post Marathon Celebration, good luck to those running tomorrow!

Hello Everyone,

Good luck to everyone running tomorrow, whether it's Montreal or Ottawa.  However, if you are in Montreal and crave a real beer (the Michelob Ultra at the end of the race will not count at all), we will be celebrating properly @ 3 Brasseurs on St. Denis starting around 12pm.  For more info and a list of who else might be showing up, check out the meetup page, http://www.meetup.com/Montreal-Beer-Runners/events/141478782/

Don't let the sun and temperature fool you, it's still beer running season

Hey everyone, sorry it's been a little while but we've just been having too much fun with the weather.  Yes, it's cooling off and the sun is starting to come down a bit earlier, but we still have ideal conditions for our beer runs, even if the terraces are starting to close up.  We still have some of the best bars in the city to hit before the weather takes its true turn, so c'mon out to Hurley's Wednesday and join in on the fun.

Hoooooooooottttttttttttt one

Gonna be a hot one tonight people, make sure to hydrate well BEFORE the run, the after is already a given.  The path tonight will take us on the nicely shaded mountain trail, so it won't be too terrible.

Back-up for Dieu Du Ciel

Hello everyone,

With the weather improving from the reports the last few days and a large turnout expected tonight, we have created a back-up plan in case Dieu Du Ciel is too popular tonight, as is common.  We will run to DDC, however if it is too full our backup plan is La Quincallerie, on the corner of Boyer and Rachel, as is laid out in the map which can be found on the right-hand side of the site.  Another excellent destination, this bar has a nice additional import list of great Belgian and UK beers.  We'll see everyone at 7.

Was gonna say let's run tomorrow, but....

I was excited all weekend with the prospect that we could actually get a run in tomorrow, but with the temperature expected to be around 0 at 7PM with 40% of rain, I think we may have to wait just a bit longer.  Regardless, get yourselves to Hurley's tomorrow night for a St. Patrick's Day warmup, we'll be sure to at least get one good car bomb in!

Welcome March, goodbye snow?

Well people, it looks like hopefully we've gotten past the worst of what winter can offer.  It's now time for sugar shacks, less ice, and hopefully more running.  While we're not gonna be so dumb as to jump the gun and get running quite yet, we could be looking at starting around the end of the month if things progress as they are.

In the meantime, we've got a few great bars lined up for the month.  The first few may not be as runner friendly, so we want to get them out of the way sooner than later.  Hurley's will be our St. Patty's warm-up, so for those that want to be good and ready for the weekend this is the best way to get your practice in.

Ideas will be kicking around soon about shirts, new members, new destinations, and the whole lot.  Come join us and give your input, and let's make it a great summer to run.

Where's the snow? Run optional tonight?

Well it's been quite a week of change here in Montreal, the weather gods seem to be favoring runners for now at least (tomorrow may be a different story, -15 for a high last I checked).  The snow on my balcony went from covering up my grill my completely to being almost completely gone.  So, I'll put it out there that I may take a run today, well before hitting up Ye Olde at 9 on Prince Arthur and St. Laurent, so if you're interested shoot me a message or reply in the comments here.

Otherwise, don't forget to spread the word to any non-runners that we are open and non-discriminatory right now, all are welcome to join up whenever they like and avoid cabin fever.

Happy 2013, Resolve to Run!

Welcome back everyone, and Happy New Year to all.  This should be a very exciting year for the MBR, we will continue to semi-hibernate through what is sure to be a continuing tough winter, but when this all clears up we will be back on the streets with a vengeance.  Looking forward there are things like the Spartan Race at Tremblant in May and the Tough Mudder in July that will be challenges that many of our members will face, as well as convincing more than a few people to join in for at least the half-marathon in September.

In the meantime, we will still be enjoying each others' company throughout January with a few great destinations, including a nice trip to the old Port and along St. Laurent.  Check out the bars, and we'll still be meeting 9PM every Wednesday.

December Drinking Dates Up

Well everyone, we always know that this is the busiest time of the year for everyone but there should be time made for friends and drinks, so why not Wednesday nights?  As mentioned before, since the weather is completely unpredictable this time of year and the new years' resolutions have not started, we are now meeting 9PM directly at the bars, rather than running anywhere.

We will start off this phase of the beer runners on a slightly different twist; by hitting a scotch bar.  L'ile Noire is a fantastic spot not as well known off St. Denis that does offer beer as well, but for those that are curious, they boast one of the best scotch selections in the city.

Come check it out, and now that there's no running required, there are significantly less excuses as well.

Last Run of the Season- Special Announcement

Hello Everyone,

I'd like to start by thanking all the great people that have joined us for our first full year of runs and especially those who have made us a part of each and every Wednesday night.  It's a great group, and we're not going to let it end just yet.  Though the weather is getting more and more cumbersome for running, we're gonna keep the party going, even after this last run to 3 Brasseurs.

Which leads to the special announcement of the week.  While this will be the last official Beer Run of the 2012 season, we will be bypassing the run portion and simply become the Montreal Beer (Drinkers, Drinking Society, something like that).  We will keep Wednesday night alive, but now we will start at 9 by meeting directly at our destination.  Keep an eye on the website and facebook group for the locations every week, and feel free to come at any time.  We'll aim to put our running shoes back on in March or April, once there's no more ice.

Pizza and Beer- Cheap Too!

So since the bar is my place this week the system will be a bit different than usual.  Beer will only cost everyone a fraction of the bar price, but I am cash only (I suppose I can take personal cheque as well with 2 forms of ID).  In addition, we will get some yummy yummy pizza delivered in so make sure you know what you want on yours before getting on the run.

Halloween Update- Brasserie Cherrier

Ok everyone, here's the wednesday plan:

We will meet up at 1400 Ave des pins west, Apt 701 (that's Lauren and my place), 6PM. We have zombie make-up artists waiting on hand to help those of us that are challenged in that area.

Once prepped, we'll get out to the mountain and create general mayhem. We plan to have one, perhaps two videographers to record the experience. Once we're done, we'll head off to probably one of the favorite Beer Runners Destinations, Brasserie Cherrier on St. Denis (
3638 Rue Saint Denis).  Remember...THE BAR IS CASH ONLY.

If you plan on having friends join or meet us after, they are welcome for any of it. I would assume we hit the bars around 7:45-8PM

October 1, 2012

It's October, and we're still crazy enough to be running!

Fear not everyone, the beer runners are still going, in fact we're just getting started for the fun season.  October promises to be a great month, 5 Wednesdays, 5 different great bars and a Halloween run that promises to make it a holiday to remember.  Check out the courses, get your warmer running gear out, and most importantly, bring your friends along.

Don't Be Afraid of A Little Rain

It's alright, in fact it's the best weather to run in, though at this point the forecasts seem to think that if the rain comes it will be clearing out by 7 anyways.  So if you're done with dragon boats or your marathon (congrats to all that finished this past weekend), now's a great time to enjoy the lighter side with a beer run.

If for some reason the weather does not cooperate, we can easily change the destination bar to something closer and more manageable, but what would be the fun in that?

Beer Running- The Scientific Side

So as word of the running club has been infiltrating conversation around Montreal, many people have speculated and questioned the validity of drinking beer after a run.  Some turn up their nose at the idea of being at a bar post-exercise and sweaty, some think that you are doing more harm than good for yourself.

Well, since there is no run update to give this week I instead offer a science update.  Below are two articles pertaining to the science of beer running, the first being an example directly from Dr. Manuel J Castillo-Garzon, MD, whose research inspired the original Fishtown Beer Runners club in Philadelphia.  The second is another research study summary written about from the New York Times Health & Science section.  While its science appears solid, I cannot help but question the amount of fun non-alcoholic beer offers compared to the real thing.
